We are all a piece of the stars–all (even extraterrestials) basically alike, all having some part to play in the evolving universe? The reader is left to decide if this is Truth or mystical nonsense.

This question is submerged in an adventure story in the science fiction genre and the novel can be read simply as such. There is ample adventure. The science is imaginative but not beyond the realms of possibility. Even those who are not science fiction addicts or even science literate may find some interest in the scientific problems addressed.

At a deeper level, the book is an examination of human nature. It is an allegorical tale of a man whose search for fulfillment and meaning leads him in many directions before finally petering out. On the way, he confronts conflicts between cultures, classes and the sexes. He notes the effects of different actions, attitudes and beliefs. Like a true scientist, he continually modifies his hypotheses in the light of new data but his actions are determined less by such beliefs than by the manipulations and pressures of others.
